Schedule Day-care Regulations Meals Vacations After school activities

The daily schedule varies slightly according to the age of the child and the study group, but in general it is structured as follows:

8:00 - 9:00       Day care
9:00 - 12:00     French educational programme (light snack at 10:00)
from   12:00     Lunch and Day care
13:30 - 16:00   French educational programme
16:00 - 18:30   Afternoon meal and Day care

The schedule is different on Wednesday due to a particular characteristic of the French education system – since 1881 Wednesdays have been free for the children up to the age of 11. Historically, this day was devoted to religious instruction, but now the children mostly attend clubs and hobby groups, stay at home or go to a day-care centre.

However, at Jules Verne Riga French School children do study until 12:00. Therefore for the rest of the day the school provides a day-care centre and several additional clubs, of which the parents and children may choose in addition to the curriculum. Unlike on other week days, on Wednesday the children can be taken from the school from 12:30 (after meal).

The schedule on Wednesday:

8:00 - 9:00       Day care
9:00 - 12:00     French educational programme (light snack at 10:00)
12:00               Lunch
13:00 - 16:00   Day care and/or optional clubs
16:00 - 18:30   Afternoon meal and Day care

Half-day enrolment for the children under 3 years of age

Children under 3 years of age may be enrolled in the school on a part-time basis, attending only half a day. The children attending the school part-time can be picked up at 12:30 - after lunch, but before the nap time. Please speak directly to the Director to arrange this. Currently due to the limited vacancies at the school, there is no reduction of the tuition fee for the half-day enrolment.

Naps

Children under the age of 5 take a nap between 12:30 and 14:30 daily.

A day-care centre or the garderie (in French) is a form of looking after the children - in France that means a day-care before and after the school, a playgroup. Jules Verne Riga French School ensures the day-care centre in the morning (8:00 to 9:00 a.m.) and in the afternoon (4:00 to 6:30 p.m.), as well as on Wednesday from 1:00 to 6:30 p.m. At this time the children can play in the playroom or in the courtyard of the school if the weather is good. The children may freely choose their activities (drawing, painting, making of collages, reading or playing, bicycle riding  and many others). For the students of elementary classes, a time for homeworks is organized.

▪ Parents must ensure that their children arrive at school no later than by 8:55 a.m., to properly begin the day together at 9:00 a.m.

▪ The children who are not enrolled in the afternoon day-care must be taken from the school not later than 5:00 p.m. (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday).

▪ In case of absence from school or leaving before 4:20 p.m., the school must be notified beforehand by telephone (tel. 2 9141791).

▪ On Wednesday it is possible to pick up children immediately after lunch, before the nap, but not later than 12:30 p.m.

▪ To avoid disturbing the study process and causing stress for the children, the parents will not be admitted into the school between 9:00 and 4:20 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, (9:00 and 12:30 on Wednesday) unless they have a meeting arranged with one of our teachers or one member of the staff.

▪ Meetings with teachers can be organized on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday after 4:00 p.m. And on Wednesday after 12:00 p.m. by appointment.

In Jules Verne Riga French School the knowledge is as important as the feeling of comfort of the children. We have a commitment to provide good nourishment and a high quality food. The additional fee of 2.50 LVL per day allows the school to provide healthy and balanced meals. The food is prepared using as much organic and Latvian-grown produce as possible. There are three meals per day:

  • light snack at 10:00

  • hot lunch at 12:00

  • afternoon meal at 16:00

The parents are recommended to give the children  warm breakfast before coming to school. It helps the child to start a day in the family circle and adjust better to the school’s schedule.

Importance of a balanced diet for children

The first rule for children to avoid overweight, as well as other health problems is a healthy, balanced diet. To help you understand how much and which products your child needes, nutrition experts have developed a healthy diet pyramid, where all products are divided into main groups. Pre-school children day should get 40% of cereals and bread, 35% vegetables and fruit, 20% for milk, meat and fish, and 5% oil and sweets every day.

Our children not always prefer healthy food, that is why it is so important to explore what children really like and supplement meals so that they would get all the necessary ingredients. In drawing up the kindergardens menu we payed attention to nutrition experts suggestions and developed requirements, combinig it with our preparation skills to make the menu both healthy, balanced and tasty!

Holidays are very important in that they provide an opportunity for children to rest at home after the busy study period. Since it is important not to miss school during the time of studies, the vacations are also the best time for planned family trips, visits to doctor and other out-of-class activities. After the vacations children always return to the school rested and willing to continue the studies. During the school year there are 4 short periods of vacations provided by the French education system and also, as much as possible, coordinated with the school vacations in Latvia.

However, for those parents who have no other alternative, the “garderie” (day care) will be offered from 8:00 am to 6:30 pm during the autumn (October) and winter (February) holidays.

During the Christmas and Easter holidays the school will be closed
